The forth series is here! Fox are sure that the US hit show can pull in even bigger viewing figures for it's forth season. Last time round, the makers of this US version of Pop Idol were overrun with applicants. This year even more hopefuls are turning up!
Simon Cowell, one of the judges, reduced many wannabes to tears, but naturally he is back. As are singer Paula Abdul and Grammy award winner Randy Jackson.
Simon Fuller, the former manager of the Spice Girls who jointly owns the format of the programme, is reported to have made as much as £30 million from each of the previous series and stands to make as much from Series Four.
The first run of the record breaking show ended with a sensational note for note play off between Justin Guarini and Kelly Clarkson, which Kelly duly won (just). I loved the duet she did with Will Young, the UK winner. Season Two was even closer with Ruben narrowly defeating Clay. But season three was a no brainer because Fantasia was SO much better than any of the others on the show

I didn't believe the hype! I didn't even bother watching Pop Idol until they reached the last ten singers, but not only did the show produce some genuinely talented young pop idols, most obviously, Darius and Gareth Gates, every pre-teens heart-throb, but... genuine stunned surprise... 'Pop Idol' also produced a 100% solid gold SUPERSTAR! Will Young is definitely the best voice in popular music for decades!
Will has a charming, winning personality and is accepting his fame and star status with humility. Vocally he is relaxed and comfortable in many styles of music, but favours, Soul, Motown, Jazz and Swing. Personally, because of his outstanding vocal ability and his versatility I would rate him as the finest pop and soul singer Britain has produced since Dusty Springfield!
Will Young's first single, the double A sided 'Evergreen' and 'Anything Is Possible', is great, but formula pop is hardly suitable material for such a talented songsmith. The first CD album from the show 'Pop Idol'- The Big Band Album' is in the shops and features Will on two tracks, the beautiful, lilting, 'Beyond The Sea' and the understated and romantic, 'I Won't Dance'. Most pop idols wait years to get their life stories printed, but Marie Claire Giddings has just written a Will Young book and now Will's second single 'Light My Fire' also made NUMBER ONE! On the video front, Will Young's fans are buying truckloads of the Pop Idol VHS and the Pop Idol DVD.
Now in the US the American Idol show has proved itself to be not just another hype situation. Like the UK show, American Idol wasn't just popular, it was good tv. (BTW: Pop Idol won European TV's most coveted prize, the Golden Rose Of Montreux for best tv programme!) I have enjoyed watching the great new stars that American Idol has discovered. This show was AMAZING! Surprising then that the UK's second season was such a complete pile of pants! Susanne Manning should have won, she actually won against the last ten and the Final 9, but Cowell demoralised her and manoevered a big shouty girl into the top slot. The public thought it was great that a big, plain ordinary girl could win, but were not so enthusiastic about buying her record. At this point in time we are not sure if there will ever be a Pop Idol 3... 'X-Factor' has stolen the show's thunder somewhat and produced a GREAT star in Steve Brookstein.
