THE BIG BOSSBruce Lee, James Tien, Nora Miao, Han Ying Chieh. Directed by Lo Wei.
Bruce Lee's first real kung fu movie. Filmed in Thailand and co-starring the great Han Ying Chieh as the eponymous big boss.
Nora Miao's role is very small, if you pop out for a drink of iced fruit juice you will miss it. James Tien takes Bruce under his wing in a 'big brother' role..... which was appropriate.
Unfortunately Bruce's character becomes increasingly cartoon-like as the film develops, but there ARE genuinely exciting moments. After a teasingly long wait, the explosive scene in the factory,
where the barely restrained Bruce finally snaps and starts to fight back, is a dynamic crowd pleaser. On the films release this scene got deafening roars of approval wherever the film was shown.
In retrospect this is perhaps THE moment that kicked Bruce Lee's career into overdrive and made him immortal.
Interestingly TWO different endings were filmed. In the first one, he stands, battered but victorious. In the second, a more widely seen version, he is taken away by the Police, adding the 'authorities-pleasing' message that taking things into your own hands is NOT without consequences.
