Star Trek`s first non-typecast Asian?

Garrett Wang, 25, was born in California but spent his formative years moving with his family to Indiana, Bermuda and Memphis. Whilst in Memphis he studied Karate under Elvis Presley`s teacher Ed Parker. Later he attended UCLA where he majored in Asian Studies and studied theatre. After graduating from college, he performed in numerous stage productions including works at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, the Mark Taper Forum and received unprecedented acclaim for his role in Chay Yew's play Porcelain at the Burbage Theatre.
He recently guest-starred as Margaret Cho's traditional Korean boyfriend on an episode of All-American Girl and turned down a leading role in the upcoming feature film Cruz to join the cast of Star Trek: Voyager as the ship's ops/communication officer.

He has also recently appeared with Tamlyn Tomita (Karate Kid-2) in the new Asian-American youth movie
